Buprenorphine is a mu-opioid partial agonist and has recently been approved for the treatment of opioid addiction by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Legislation has allowed its use in an office based environment thereby avoiding the physical and regulatory constraints of typical opioid substitution treatment programs.

Franey Medical Lab has developed a method for accurate and reliable quantitative measurement of buprenorphine in urine by mass spectrometry. At the same time qualitative assessment for norbuprenorphine, naloxone, methadone, oxycodone and other potential drugs of abuse can easily be performed.

These tests are of limited clinical value unless performed on a timely basis and for this reason Franey Medical Lab performs them on a daily basis. Thus the physician can now be assured of patient compliance and can also detect those non-compliant clients seeking only a free supplement to their habit or a drug to sell on the street.
